Introduction to Thermal and Chemical EOR Modelling with STARS
Learn about thermal EOR modelling and chemical flooding simulation with alkaline, surfactants, and/or polymers (ASP) using CMG STARS technology.
In the first part of the course, you will learn the various facets of thermal EOR modelling including:
- Component design
- Thermal properties
- Relative permeability interpolation
Build your expertise through a series of hands-on exercises on steam flood and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) applications.
In the second part of the course, the focus will switch to chemical EOR modelling with STARS, with emphasis on Alkali, Surfactant, Polymer (ASP) modelling. You will learn:
- How to build a typical chemical flooding dataset
- How to History Match an ASP coreflood model using CMG CMOST (uncertainty assessment package)
The chemical EOR session will highlight the most up to date functionalities in CMG STARS for chemical EOR modelling, including shear, salinity and pH-dependent effects as well as geochemistry.
This course provides engineers, geologists and other technical personnel with the information and techniques required to build a simple STARS dataset and explore complex STARS functions in the area of Thermal and Chemical EOR modelling.

- Black Oil model dataset conversion to STARS
- Modelling of steam flood and cyclic steam stimulation
- Relative permeability interpolation, 9-point scheme, temperature-dependent relative permeability curves
- Basic chemical flooding theory
- Concepts of laboratory evaluations
- Saponification and salinity gradients
- Water/oil relative permeability curve changes (interpolation based on composition)
- Phase behavior and interfacial tension lowering
- Coreflood design and evaluation
- Construct a STARS simulation dataset to history match a laboratory experiment of an ASP coreflood
- Use of CMOST to match the STARS ASP coreflood experiment
- Scale-up and Field scale simulation
